10 Tips to Study Psychology Effectively Like Me

Recently I got my grades back from the final exams for my undergrad courses at University. My GPA has been holding steady at a 4.0 for my entire undergraduate psychology career. By itself, this is not a terribly incredible feat, but the fact that I managed to do this while working full time and still having time to socialize on the weekends makes this a little more amazing.

It may come to some people naturally, but good organizational skills also play a key role in how effectively you study psychology, and therefore also on how well you do in your classes.

This type of learning and study psychology strategy has been defined by some as holistic learning. Holistic learning is effectively using your ‘whole person’ to learn effectively, and linking all of the pertinent information together in webs or strings. This works better than cramming, as you begin to understand how the different ideas and elements of psychology interconnect and relate to each other.

Building an Understanding Of How To Study Psychology Effectively

Learning is a very complicated process, not unlike building a  home. Only you’re building a home without the help of an architect…there are no plans given to you. The limitations of communication circumvent the instantaneous transmission of knowledge. Instead you attend lectures, read horrible study psychology textbooks, take notes, and try to cram the knowledge into your head.

You are given the supplies…brick, mortar, sheetrock, lumber, etc., and it is up to you to construct your home. Most learning styles can be summarized in two basic types.

  1. Memorization – Rather than linking everything together, you stare at each individual element and try to memorize every tiny detail.
  2. Formulas – This is sort of like being blind, and coming up with rules on what not to do, or how not to act.

There is nothing wrong with either strategy, as long as you don’t rely too heavily on just one. The human brain isn’t a computer so it can’t memorize infinite sums of knowledge without some form of structure. And formulas no longer work if the questions they are designed to solve change scope.

Study Psychology Holistically

The alternative strategy is to focus on actually using the information you have to build something. This involves linking concepts together and compressing information so it fits in the bigger picture. Here are some ideas to get started:

  1. Metaphorical Thought – Metaphors will allow you to quickly arrange information through comparing complex ideas with simpler ones. When you find relationships between information, come up with analogies to increase your understanding. Compare neurons with waves on a string. Make metaphors comparing parts of a brain with sections of your computer.
  2. Utilize Every Sense - Abstract ideas are difficult to memorize because they are far removed from our innate senses. Shift them closer by coming up with vivid pictures, feelings and images that help you correlate information together. When I was began to study psychology stats, I remember making vivid diagrams in my head to help remember some of the formulas.
  3.  Teach It - Teaching others, such as tutoring, can also help reinforce the same ideas in you. Put your organization and knowledge to the test, help someone else study psychology.
  4. Leave Nothing Unread – When you are reading through text books, no matter how boring, read every single word and comprehend it to the best of your ability.
  5. Have Good Mobility! - If you can’t move between concepts easily, you have poor mobility. Open up a new word document and begin by explaining the subject you are studying. If you can’t jump between sections, referencing one idea to help explain another, you won’t be able to work through the connections during a test.
  6.  Recognize Patterns – Keep on the look out for similar, repeating patterns. Information and ideas are much easier to organize if you can recognize patterns that are similar in different areas of psychology. The way a neuron fires has similarities to “if” statements in computer programming languages.
  7. Build a Large Foundation - I may have mentioned earlier that reading textbooks can be boring, but consuming all of the information you can get your hands on will definitely help you build a strong foundation. The more you know, the easier it is to learn!
  8. Don’t Force It - Cramming information before an exam is the absolute worst way to learn. You may get a decent grade, but you will learn absolutely none of it, and what good is that to you later on in life? Forcing information during the last few days is incredibly bad. Instead, slowly interlink the ideas and concepts, so every time you study psychology, the knowledge you already have flows naturally and can even help you in learning new material.
  9. Build Models – Models are simple concepts that aren’t true by themselves, but are useful for describing abstract ideas. Crystallizing one particular mental image or experience can create a model you can reference when trying to understand. When I was trying to tackle the concept of subspaces, I visualized a blue background with a red plane going through it. This isn’t an entirely accurate representation of what a subspace is, but it created a workable image for future ideas.
  10. Learning is all in Your Head – Having awesome notes and a wonderfully highlighted textbook doesn’t matter if you don’t understand a single word of the information in it. Your only goal is to understand the information so it will stick with you for research papers, assignments, tests, and the rest of your life. Don’t be afraid to get messy when scrawling out ideas on paper and connecting them in your head. Use your notes and textbooks as a tool to help you learn, not as something for you to reference later.

These tips may sound very basic, but I guarantee some of them are new to at least half you guys. If you want to study psychology well, or any subject for that matter, organization is key and following these steps can help you out with that. I truly enjoy helping others study psychology, and hopefully this article has helped you. These tips can also help with any other subject matter, as well as with life in general. Study Psychology Tips - Common Essay Mistakes - A Picture of an Essay

Do you study psychology? Here are some of the most common errors psychology students make on their papers.

Don’t stress out too much, we’ve all made mistakes in writing from time to time. Everyone has received back a paper covered in ‘blood,’ the term of endearment some professors and teaching assistants use for the universally beloved red ink used to make corrections. Everyone makes mistakes. Even professors and TAs. Students, writers, and professors all need a little reminder of what they should not do. So, in order to help you study psychology and write better papers in a good, proper style, here is a list of some things that you should definitely consider when writing your research papers.

  1. No thesis or proper introduction
    • Explanation: A very important piece in the of the puzzle of your research paper when you study psychology is the thesis and introductory statements. If you could wrap it all up in one or a few sentences, this would be it.
    • Remedy: A good idea is to have your thesis at the end of your study psychology introductory paragraph, and it should outline the basis of your research.
  2. Repetition or redundancy
    • Explanation: Pretty self explanatory. Don’t repeat the same idea over and over.
    • Remedy: Insure that each paragraph has its own focus, and stays on topic. Refer to your outline to check on the subject matter of each section or paragraph.
  3. No evidence, or improper resources cited
    • Explanation: Resources are key. Your resources should be good, scholarly resources. As a general rule, webpages are not good resources, nor is Wikipedia.
    • Remedy: The best remedy for this is to go to the library, or consult your library’s online article compendium. Thousands upon thousands of legitimate scientific and scholarly articles are available online.
  4. Misuse of punctuation
    • Explanation: Proper grammar is key to getting a good grade on any kind of college level essay or paper, and bad grammar can even reduce an A paper to a C.
    • Remedy: Find a book on grammar. Look through your essay purely for commas and punctuation, and evaluate each instance and compare it to the rules of grammar. You will remove most of your errors this way.
  5. Plagiarism
    • Explanation: Plagiarism occurs when you use the writing of others, whether intentionally or accidentally. Always citing your sources properly will help you avoid this pitfall.
    • Remedy: Be sure to always cite your sources, in text AND in your reference list at the end of the paper. If you are going to use a direct quote, make sure that you attribute this quote to the proper author IN the text!
  6. Spelling errors/Typos
    • Explanation: Spelling errors, just like grammar, can bring a good grade to a bad grade.
    • Remedy: More important than using your computer’s spell checker is to proof read. Have your friends proof read. Have your dog proof read. Make sure it’s all good!
  7. Lack of transitional phrases
    • Explanation: When you begin a new paragraph, the transitional phrase is what guides the reader from the old into the new.
    • Remedy: Read each paragraph independently of each other. If they make sense alone, you should probably be ok. If not, add a brief but detailed introductory sentence to the paragraphs you find lacking.
  8. Lack of structure
    • Explanation: Research papers need structure. The rules of an introduction, body, conclusion come into play here, as well as content! Don’t just fill your paper with fluff.
    • Remedy: Create an outline for your essay and follow it to a T!
  9. No Conclusion
    • Explanation: People sometimes stop writing an essay before it ends. You should always have a summary and discussion!
    • Remedy: This is pretty simple. You don’t need new ideas, just discuss and touch on each of your ideas or theories here, and state your findings and what you have learned.
